For decades, the traditional method for creating a waterproof flat roof was the 'pour and roll' technique using bituminous felt. This process involved heating bitumen (tar) to a liquid state and pouring it across the roof deck. A layer of roofing felt was then rolled out over the hot bitumen. This was typically done in multiple layers to build up a robust, waterproof membrane.
However, this method has significant drawbacks. It is a labour-intensive process that involves hazardous hot materials, posing risks during installation. Furthermore, the seams between the rolls of felt are a common point of failure. Over time, exposure to the UK's fluctuating temperatures can cause these seams to become brittle, crack, and ultimately lead to leaks. This vulnerability is why modern, seamless systems like EPDM and GRP are now the preferred choice for a long-lasting, reliable flat roof.
